Report on Safari Park
Introduction:
Safari parks are zoo like commercial tourist attraction where visitors can drive in their own vehicles and observe the wild life, rather than viewing animals in cages or small enclosures. These parks serve a lot of important functions such as:
· Maintaining ecosystem of nature
· Preserving wild lives
· Display of local, regional and exotic fauna of rare species
· Treatment of sick animals
· Captive breeding
· Education
· Basic and applied research
· Entertainment
In our country, we have a few safari parks. Among these the Bangabandhu Sheik Mujib Safari park is the most popular. We have paid a visit to that safari park to gain knowledge under the course “Zoo and Laboratory Animal Management”.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park
Location And accessibility:
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park is located eastern side of Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong highway at 10.0 Km South from Chakaria Thana and 50.0 Km North from Cox’s Bazar District Town. It is established in the dulahazra block under Fashiakhal Range, Cox’s Bazar North forest Division in Cox’s Bazar.
Area : 900 hector.
Established : 1999
At first, in 1982 safari park was established as a “Deer breeding centre”. At that time it was only one Deer. Breeding centre of Bangladesh when only Samber Deer was present in this area.
The project in the development of the Safari Park includes three phases:
1st phase : 1999 - 2002
2nd phase : 2002 - 2006
3rd phase : 2006 – present

Visit to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park
Visit to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park as a study tour of the subject “ZOO AND LABORATORY ANIMAL MANAGEMENT” was performed on 20 January, 2011. All of the students of 2nd year 1st semester including our class teacher started our visit from our university campus at 7.27 am by our university bus. At about 11.00 am we reached our destination.
We enter in the park and get wonder to see the different types of large architecture of animal such as Giraffe, Dinosaurs, and Peacock etc. With a large model of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park and a Orchid house which is full of different types Orchid.
In the park we got introduce with Dr. Malak and Dr. Mostafiz who work as Veterinarian in this park. . Dr. Malak and Dr. Mostafiz gave a lecture after a refreshment time. Their lecture includes History, Management, Feeding, Preventive Measures, Restraining and Wild lives of the park.

Management:
Management system including breeding feeding, Housing and hygiene. It includes feces observation as well as animal behavior. If there is present any variation in feces and behavior, it primarily indicates the animal is hot well. It park animal keeper is 10 in number and scout is 12 in number. Visitors allowed inside park after 8 am.

Housing:
Housing to wild animals and birds is done:
1. To protect from adverse environmental condition.
2. To facilitate breeding, feeding, watering and treatment in captivity.
3. To protect from stress due to visitors and also to protect the visitors as well.
Following points should be considered before housing :
· On the basis of the requirement of animal, housing should be done. Housing system differ from animal to animal.

ü Nest box (In case of birds)
· For Lion & Tiger ( Three compartments )-
ü Large enclosure
ü Mini enclosure
ü Control enclosure
· The total provided area for lion and tiger is 80 hector.

Feeding:
Feed is supply to the animal according to the rule of “SAZARC” (South Asian Zoo Association Cooperation). Vegetables, grass, leaf etc are supplied to the herbivores. Omnivores are supplied with honey and other necessaries. Carnivores are supplied with meat. In case of crocodile 10% of body weight feed is given once in a week. Birds are supplied with variety of feed. Some of them can be also fed with grass. Feed supplied to animal once in a day and the nocturnal are supplied during evening.
The Lion is supplied 10 Kg meat. In case of elephant total feed supplied 240 Kg. Where 200 Kg maintained by providing leaf of banana tree and 500 gm salt is provided. Tortoise is provided shrimp, vegetable.
Restraining:
Restraining means partially or fully control of animal for restrain.
There are two method of restraining:
1. Capture method.
2. Chemical method.
Chemical method:

· Range – 150 feet.
B. Blow pipe
· Range – 20 feet.
C. Pistol

· Dart:
Consist of two chambers.
ü Air chamber
ü Drug chamber
· Needle with rubber cap.
· Stabilizer.
· Cotton bud
To maintain the direction and increase the force of dart.
Quarantine and Isolation:
1. Isolation Room:
Animals which are known to be suspected or to be affected the apparently healthy animals. When authority of park gets sure about the disease of any animal, they quickly transfer the diseased animal in the isolation room.
2. Quarantine Room:
Quarantine means the segregation of apparently healthy animal that have been exposed to the risk of communicable disease and the animal that have been imported. In safari park quarantine period is maintained 21 days. During this period, if animals are diseased it shows the clinical sign because it is the incubation period of different contagious diseases. It the animal is well get included its special enclosure and if it is sick, the bill cannot pay to the contractor.
3. Operation room:
It is used for surgical purpose. Different types of modern instrument and medicine get preserved for diseased animal. It helps to remove pathological disorder to get rid of animal sufferings. Surgical operation performs in case of physical disorder and parasitic infection.

1. Physical test of quality and quantity of food.
2. Treatment of sick animals.
3. Capturing wild life.
